Ask the expert

How often should I trim my dog’s nails?
Ask the Vet
When it comes to nail trimming you should look for the proper length and not a schedule. The nail should be nearly touching the ground, just a bit higher. If the dog as dewclaws, trim these nails so that they have the same size as other nails. Another rule you can also apply is to have your dog’s nails the same length as the width of the toe.

The size of the nails may vary depending on the breed, but generally speaking, every two weeks or so, dog’s nails should be trimmed. The trimming of the nails is extremely important for dogs, since having the nails too long may hurt him walking and running. If you let the dewclaw nail too long, it can penetrate the skin and cause pain to the animal.
