Ask the expert

After giving birth, how long do I have to wait to spay my cat?
Ask the Vet
Spaying is a medical procedure of removing the uterus and the ovaries of the cat and it is usually recommended after the six months of age. Giving birth doesn´t make spaying impossible and because cats can become pregnant again in a matter of days after giving birth, many owners prefer to spay them right away. However it is best to wait until the litter kittens are weaned to spay the mother. The kittens will start to eat solid food at eight weeks and by that time the mammary glands and the uterus of the mother won´t be swollen, making the procedure easier and safer.
