History [ edit ]

This cockatoo is from Timor-Leste and Indonesia. Although they were once considered a pest because they eat crops and nest in fields, they are now critically endangered specie in the wild. The number of wild Yellow-Crested Cockatoos has been rapidly decreasing due to its capture for illegal trading, responsible for the decrease of 80% of wild specimens.

Temperament [ edit ]

These are active birds, especially in the morning. They need space and toys so they don’t get destructives. They are gentle birds, often called “apartment sized”, but they are also known for the harsh screeches that they release frequently, which can upset the neighbors. As they grow older they may get aggressive. They’re not for the inexperienced owner.

However their ability to whistle and mimic human voice has delighted many.
They live up to 40 years, sometimes more and establish a bond with the owner.

The yellow crest is usually laid back and it will only be raised when the cockatoo is exited or alarmed.

Cockatoos need a lot of attention and if you don´t have enough free time, it is advisable to keep a pair.

General appearance [ edit ]

The Yellow-Crested Cockatto is the smallest of the "Sulphur Cresteds" with 35 cm maximum. This bird is all white with the exception of a yellow crest, which gives him its name, yellow cheeks and yellow on the undersides of the wings and tail. The bill is black and the legs are grey.

Sexing the birds can be done by observing the eye color: the males have darker eyes than females.

Housing [ edit ]

Cockatoos need larger cages, unless they are permitted to fly around the house most of the time. They can live in aviaries all year long without heating. They need sturdy cages that have to be “bill proof”.

Parrot food with a daily amount of fruit and greenfood will do the trick. Pellets can be added to change the regular diet.
