History [ edit ]

This bird is originated from Java, Bali islands in Indonesia but it has spread to the South of Asia and some parts of Africa. Due to the Java´s appetite for rice it is considered a pest in some parts of its native territory. It was once a very prolific bird, but nowadays, the population of Java Sparrows is decreasing and it is considered protected specie.

Temperament [ edit ]

These birds are peaceful and get along with other aviary birds and other small finches. They don´t usually like other java sparrows on the same cage and tend to get aggressive.

General appearance [ edit ]

The Java Sparrow is the largest members of its group, reaching up to 15 cm in length. Males and females are identical in appearance and it´s their singing divergences that allows us to distinguish their genre. Only the males sing and perform a small dance. Although loud, they don´t sing often. The females make clicking sounds, but they don´t sing as the males do.

The feathers of this bird are pearl-grey, becoming pinkish on belly. A black head and tail and white cheeks complete the outfit.

Housing [ edit ]

The most important aspect in housing Java Sparrows is the space. These birds like their space, and if so, they will tolerate a wide range of bird breeds. Another important feature is that they can´t be exposed to draughts or wind. You have to choices: indoor accommodation or incorporate a shelter for the birds to retreat to when they need to, especially during nighttime.

They cope well the lower temperatures, and moving them to wormer places or placing a heater is only necessary in especially cold winters.

Diet [ edit ]

For a good diet basis for the Java Sparrow mix paddy rice with budgerigar food. Trace minerals, vitamins and limiting amino acids should also be present. These birds also appreciate peas, green beans, corn, spray millet and egg food, so you can include this in their diet.
