History [ edit ]

The Egyptian Mau is a natural, and probably the most ancient, breed of cat, which origin is lost in time. It is believed that this breed descended from a spotted subspecies of the African Wild Cat domesticated by the Egypians between 4000 and 2000 BC. Hieroglyphs depicting the Egyptian Mau (Mau is the Egyptian word for the divine cat) were found on a temple wall in the south of Cairo dated around 2200 BC. The Mau was extraordinarily valuable for the Egyptians who worshiped it as a god. When a cat died is was mummified, entombed and mourned by the Egyptians. This breed was first seen in Europe in the 1950’s and in 1957 was imported into the USA. The Mau, is one of only two naturally spotted cat breeds still in existence, the other spotted cats being the result of selective breeding. Therefore, it is not surprising the awful amount of attention that its striking appearance attracts at cat shows and the increasing number of its fanciers. However, it is still an uncommon breed.

The cheeks are not full and the chin is firm, not receding or protruding. The Nose is even in width throughout length. The eyes, large and almond shaped, have a slight slant towards the ears, are light green in colour and have an alert expression. The ears are large, alert, broad at the base and moderately pointed and set wide apart. The tail is medium long, muscular, thick at base, tapering slightly. The close-lying coat is medium in length and fine, silky, resilient in texture and with a lustrous sheen. The Egyptian Mau comes in three colors Silver, Bronze, and Smoke. Some can come in solid Black and in dilute versions of Blue Silver, Blue spotted (dilute bronze), Blue Smoke and solid Blue. Temperament [ edit ]

The Egyptian Mau is an extremely intelligent cat, moderately active and a quick learner of tricks. They are very playful and get along well with other cats and also with other animals when properly socialized. They are extremely devoted to their human family and adore all the attention they can get. Generally they express their happiness by chuckling in a soft, melodious voice and wiggling their tails at great speed. They get bored when left alone for long periods of time and need a stimulating environment with toys and scratching posts. Another cat would be ideal. Due to their striking appearance, they should be kept indoors and take to exercise on a lead, which they really enjoy.  The Egyptian Mau is very tolerant with children and is a wonderful companion.
