Temperament [ edit ]

The male, Rooster or Cock, is at the top of the hierarchy. He is the first to awake and he sings at dawn to give the wake up call to the rest of the group. He is also the first one to go to bed, signalling the other hens to do the same. Males are extremely competitive and fight to death for their territory and hens, so groups shouldn’t have more than one male.

The typical dominance behavior for males is to raise the tail and head. The other shows submission by lowering the head and tail, sometimes crouching.

Between hens there is also a hierarchy. Hens need to establish it away from the male, since he breaks up the fights when they occur.
