Although this breed was only recognized in 1924, their origins can be traced at least 100 years before that period. Resulting from a cross between the Old English Mastiff with Bulldogs this dog was mostly used as a gamekeeper's dog. He was especially good at capture the intruders without killing them.
Their popularity decreased overtime due to people’s preference for the Rottweiler, which is easier to train.
They are mainly used as guard dogs, task that they perform with excellence.

General appearance [ edit ]
Fast, but calm, active but strong, the Bullmastiff is a powerful dog, with a strong presence even if he just lying on the floor.
Their weight varies between 41 and 59 Kg and the height is between 64 and 69 cm. This dog can be watched in three different colors: red, fawn, or brindle but they always have a short and close coat that protects them from the rain.
The main deference between the Bullmastiff and the English mastiff is their size, being the last one a little bit taller, and the head. The Bullmastiff has a more compact head, with small ears, giving it a more squared appearance. The eyes are dark separated from a different type of furrow. The nose is black

Temperament [ edit ]
They are the protectors of the human race, keeping any threat under his close attention. They are guard dogs that sometimes have an overprotective trait to them. They love their human family, to whom they are very docile, even to children. Still, due to it´s size they can harm children unintentionally while playing. They don´t see with good eyes the small animals and early socialization is a must.
They are stubborn and not easy to train, but they are one of the most loyal breeds. They become very attached to their families, so the ideal solution is that they can live inside the house and have as well a small yard to protect.
Active and alert they don´t attack the intruders, but jump on them and hold them on the ground. They don´t bark as much as other guard dogs, but when they do, everyone notices it, because of their strong and deep voice. These traits make them the ideal guard dog for those that have the right amount of patience to train them.
