History [ edit ]

The Bulldog is a medium-sized dog breed that descended from ancient Asiatic mastiffs but was develloped in Great Britain.  Also called the English Bulldog or British Bulldog, the name bulldog derives not only from the robust, bull-like appearance of this breed, but also from the power it displayed when bullbaiting, a very popular British sport in the 1700´s. This sport was prohibited by law in the nineteenth century and the breed knew a great decline until Bill George, a breeder, and other fanciers of bulldogs, developped the breed into its present form, smaller and heavier set than original bulldogs which were lighter boned and very athletic. The breed´s temperament was also radically altered, the undesirable vicious and fierce characteristics being eliminated while preserving all the fine qualities. Bulldogs are extremelly good guards and watchdogs and despite their intimidanting appearance, they do not attack people or other dogs without a good reason and make pleasant companions.

General Appearance [ edit ]

The Bulldog is a strong, massively built, resolute, small in stature dog, a bunch of muscles suggesting great strength vigour and stability. The body is wide and compact, heavy, thick-set, with well-rounded ribs and a belly tucked up and not rotund. The very broad, deep and full chest is very capacious. The back is strong and short, very broad at the withers and narrowing towards the loins. The topline is a very distinctive feature of the breed, with a slight fall in the middle of the the back and curving suddenly to the tail, forming an arch. The short-faced head is massive, thick and broad with cheeks that extend to the sides of the eyes. The head and face are covered with heavy wrinkles, and the throat has pendulous folds, forming a dewlap. The skull is very large, and the forehead is flat, neither too prominent nor overhanging the face with a both deep and broad stop. The muzzle is broad, short, and turned upward with a large, broad and black nose set close together with the eyes. Wide, large and black nostrils have a well-defined line between them. The upper lip is pendent and the lower jaw is very undershot. The very dark eyes are very round, moderate in size, neither sunken nor bulging and very wide set.The small and thin ears are set high in the head and folded inward at its back lower edge in the form of a rose. The tail is short, with a  thick root and a fine tip and either straight or screwed, but never curved or curly. It is carried low.The fine-textured coat is short, and close, smooth and glossy and comes in brindle, red, fawnpale yellow,  washed-out red, white, or a combination of any of these colors.

Temperament [ edit ]

English Bulldogs are one of the most friendlier breeds though stubborn in nature. Despite their intimidating looks, they are kind, pacific, courageous and dignified neither vicious nor aggressive. The reputation of being ferocious was true sone centuries ago, but the modern Bulldog is very affectionate and loves being being people and should not be left alone in the backyard for long periods of time. This breed is very loyal and protective of its family, gets along with other household pets and is reliable with people if proper socialized from puppywood. Sometimes they may show some aggressiveness towards strange dogs. Training should be firm and consistent, because some of these dogs can be a bit dominanting. Properly handled they make tremenduous guard dogs, capable of driving away any intruder. Bulldogs are very playful and patient with children who are perfectly safe with these dogs. They are indeed remarkable guardians and pets.
