10 basic responsibilities

When you decide to get a dog you must bear in mind that there are some responsibilities which should be put in order to ensure good living conditions for your animal.

1. Choose a veterinarian and have him to examine your dog within a few days of his arrival.

2. Keep your dog current on his vaccinations. The vaccination series normally begins at 6 weeks of age and the animal must be perfectly healthy at the time of the inoculation. Consult with your vet for appropriate dog’s vaccination and de-worming schedules.

3. Train you dog to answer basic commands and make sure you can control him at all times. By fully controlling your dog you are protecting him from many potential dangers.

4. Take care of your dog with proper dog nutrition and feeding. Choose food that provides the appropriate balance of nutrients and maintain a regular feeding schedule. Make sure your dog has always fresh water available.
5. Keep your dog in a safe environment.  Make sure he does not run away. A fleeing dog is bound to face dangers from which he will be incapable of defending himself.

6. Keep your dog on a leash, or otherwise properly restrained when out in public, especially when there are children playing around. Children are not aware of their own unsafe behaviour and even a friendly dog can become agitated by teasing or rough handling.

7. Keep your dog in a quiet environment. Parties, especially children's parties, may be too exciting for your dog, which may become confused and potentially aggressive as a result.

8. Provide adequate housing for your pet. Outdoors, the shelter should be adequate in terms of shade, insulation and ventilation. When indoors your dog should have a private, quiet and comfortable place to live in, free of air drafts and humidity.

9. Keep your dog clean.  Bathe and comb him on a regular basis adequate to his breed and the area in which he lives. Consult with your vet regularly.

10. Spend some time with your dog and exercise him on a daily basis. The exercise should be adequate to his breed and age. Periodically observe and study carefully your animal, looking for any change in behaviour or in appearance. Through a thoughtful observation you can discover small health problems before they get serious.
